The professional education preparation programs at Old Dominion University are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Virginia Department of Education.

Licensure Only Teacher Education Programs

The non-degree teacher education licensure only program is for individuals who have completed a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and wish to qualify for a Virginia teaching license.

Individuals who have a valid Virginia license and wish to add an endorsement may select any of the following add-on endorsements:

  • computer science
  • algebra
  • journalism
  • industrial cooperative training

Admissions Requirements

Regular Admission

  • have earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 for all undergraduate college credits
  • passing scores on Praxis I or achieved SAT or ACT scores as prescribed by the Board of Education

Provisional Admission

  • Have earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a minimum cumulative GPA between 2.50 and 2.74 for all undergraduate college credits
  • Passing scores on Praxis I or achieved SAT or ACT scores as prescribed by the Board of Education

Application Form and Instructions

NOTE:  To gain Regular Admission from provisional admission, the student must complete at least 6 credits of 300/400 acedemic content knowledge courses from Old Dominion University as designated by the program advisor, and pass with at least a grade of B in each course.

Applicants who do not meet the admissions requirements listed above, may request an "exception" to the departmental requirements on the "Licensure Ony Exception Request" form obtained from the appropriate Teacher Education Services advisor or site director.  This exception requires approval from the academic Department Chair and the Associate Dean.

Application Procedures

  • interview and receive recommendation for admittance from a department representaive, Teacher Education Services Advisor, or site director (TELETECHNET ONLY)
  • complete the Darden College of Education Teacher "Licensure Only" Program Application form
  • submit Licensure Only Program application with a copy of passing scores on Praxis I or equivalent SAT or ACT, and official transcripts to Teacher Education Servicies and Advising, Room 152, Education Building
