Undergraduate Exercise Science Advising

Old Dominion University currently requires that you meet with your academic program advisor in both the fall and the spring semesters to be advised about course options and career choices.  You will be able to sign up for an advising appointment with a member of the Exercise Science faculty during the month prior to the start of online registration in November and April each academic year.  Please be prepared to meet with your advisor by determining which courses you plan to take during the following semester(s) prior to your appointment.  The following scheduling tips will help you plan out your course options.

Important Pre-Requisite Courses for the Exercise Science program:

BIO 250 (Anatomy & Physiology I)

  • You must take this course, as a pre-requisite to every EXSC major or minor course except the introductory one (EXSC 225).
  • You do NOT have to take the BIO 115/116 series before enrolling in BIO 250.
  • BIO 251 is also required for the major, but is not a pre-requisite course.
  • At ODU, BIO 250 is ONLY offered during the fall semester of the regular academic year, as well as during the summer.  TCC offers it every semester, however.
  • If you have not taken BIO 250 before fall semester of your junior year, you will fall behind in your courses for completion of the major in two years.
  • Do NOT drop this course unless advised to do so by a departmental advisor.

EXSC 409 or EXSC 426

  • For the Scientific Foundations track, enroll in EXSC 426; all others, including EXSC minors should take EXSC 409.
  • You must take one of these courses as a pre-requisite for other courses in the major, including EXSC 415, EXSC 428, EXSC 431, and EXSC 427 (SF track).
  • If you switch tracks after taking one of these courses, they can substitute for each other, but SF track students still need to take EXSC 427.
  • EXSC 426 is a FALL semester only course; do NOT drop this course unless advised to do so by a departmental advisor.
  • EXSC 409 is offered both fall and spring semesters.
  • EXSC 427 can be taken after either and is offered in the SPRING semester only.

PHYS 111

  • The first semester of the physics series is a CO-requisite for EXSC 417 (Biomechanics).  You can take it beforehand or enroll in both during one semester.
  • Students in the SF track will also need to take this course before enrolling in PHYS 112, which is required for that track only.

STATS 130M

  • For students in the SF track, this course is a pre-requisite for EXSC 420 (Research Methods).  Students in the Preventive/Rehabilitative track do NOT need either course.

Graduation Checklist

In the semester prior to the one in which you plan to graduate, you need to do the following:

  • Complete the UG application for graduation using the PDF form you can find online at http://www.odu.edu/ao/registrar/pdf/forms/UGGraduationApplication.pdf.  You can complete and e-mail the form to the registrar's office (graduate@odu.edu), mail it in, or drop it off there (Rollins Hall, Room 116).
    • Deadlines: November 30 for spring graduation; February 28 for summer graduation; June 30 for fall graduation.
  • Take and pass the exit examination of writing proficiency required by ODU; you should sign up to take this at the Writing Center as soon as you have completed ENGL 110 and at least 58 credits.  Exam dates and other info are available at the Writing Center web site: www.studentaffairs.odu.edu/writingcenter
  • Complete the online senior assessment form.  An e-mail about this should be sent to you after you apply for graduation.  If not, you can request access to the survey by completing an online form found at http://sci.odu.edu/sci/academics/undergraduate_advising/graduate_req/seniorasses.shtml.
  • Meet with a departmental advisor to have a certification form completed that will be turned in to the registrar's office for you; without this form, they will not sign off that you have completed your courses and award your diploma.
  • Meet with an advisor in the department to certify that you have met the requirements for your minor (if you completed one).  If you completed a cluster instead, it can be certified as well during the visit with your EXSC advisor.
  • Schedule an exit interview for EXSC with Dr. Liz Dowling.  Do it early in the semester as she will not have time during the 3-4 weeks preceding registration.
  • Make sure that your GPA for all EXSC classes is 2.0 or higher, as well as your overall GPA in all courses.  You will need to repeat classes for grade forgiveness, if it is not, in order to graduate with a GPA that is high enough.

The following two forms will need to be completed and brought with you to your Exercise Science exit interview in the last semester of your program.
