Old Dominion University-Teacher Immersion Residency (ODU-TIR)
Old Dominion University is pleased to announce the Old Dominion University-Teacher Immersion Residency (ODU-TIR) program, an apprenticeship-based program of study for individuals with a deep commitment to teaching in high-need schools. This Masters of Science program in secondary education will lead to licensure in math, earth science, English, or Social Studies and qualified to teach dual enrollment courses.
Program Overview:
The program will begin in August 2010 in a program lasting three semesters. Each student will complete 42-semester hours of graduate study, including a yearlong school-based residency in a high-need school in either Norfolk Public Schools or Portsmouth Public Schools, and education pedagogy and content courses, including a state-of-the-art Immersion Internship. During the Fall and Spring semesters, students will enroll in 30-graduate credit hours total, including 12-credit hours in the content field, 6-credit hours of in-school residency, and 12 credit hours of professional education courses. During Summer Session I, students will enroll in 3-credit hours of in-school residency and 3-credit hours of professional education studies. During Summer Session II, students will enroll in 6-credits of content immersion internship. The ODU-TIR requires a commitment of 3 years teaching in Norfolk Public Schools or Portsmouth Public Schools after completing the program. During that time, you will have intensive mentoring to support your development as a teacher.
On graduation, successful students of the ODU-TIR will receive
- Master of Science in Secondary Education from ODU with a Post-Graduate Professional License from the Virginia Department of Education in one of the high-need content disciplines;
- Qualify to teach dual enrollment courses;
- Three -years of mentoring post-graduation for new teachers in high-need schools;
- Employment as a teacher in one of the high-need schools of Norfolk Public Schools and Portsmouth Public Schools for a period of no less than three years
ODU-TIR Supports and Incentives for Students Accepted into the Program
- All tuition and fees paid
- $25,000 stipend*
- $500 textbook allowance
- Laptop computer with student software and wireless card
- Professional Development funds for travel/expenses up to $1,000 per student
Admission Requirements
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in high-need subject
- Undergraduate GPA in major of 3.0 or higher
- Passing scores on Praxis I, or board-approved SAT/ACT scores
- Passing scores on Praxis II in content area
- Passing scores on VA Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA)
- Score of at least 1,000 combined on Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
- Minimum passing score of 68 on Gallup's TeacherInsightTM
- Evidence of successful work or volunteer experience with high-need/urban youth
- Completion of OUD online application, including supporting documentation

*All students are required to sign an Agreement to Serve indicating they will serve as a full-time teacher in a high-need school for no less than three academic years immediately after residency. Student who do not complete the agreed upon service will be required to repay the stipend, tuition, and other incentives.
