Dean's Welcome

The faculty and I are delighted to welcome you to the Darden College of Education website. Our commitment to collaboration, professionalism, and innovation can be seen in the ways we add value to our undergraduate and graduate degree programs, to our research, and to our service to the community and world. 

 

The Darden College of Education provides outstanding opportunities for students, faculty and staff in learning, discovery, and engagement with the community.  The college is home to 108 faculty members in five academic departments.  Housed also in the college are nine service units that have outreach, research, and non-credit instructional responsibilities.

In 2006-2007, the college awarded 433 bachelor's degrees, 634 master's degrees, 13 educational specialist degrees and  8 doctoral degrees.  Additionally, 754 students completed their professional education programs and were recommended for licensure in Virginia.

Our alumni make significant contributions to their professions.  In 2006/2007, 84 alumni were named Teacher-of-the-Year in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia.  Alumnus Tommy Smigiel, Jr. has been named the 2008 Virginia Teacher- of-the Year.   Six of the  20 teachers named as Outstanding Teachers in metropolitan Washington by the Washington Post for 2007 were alumni of Old Dominion University.

The Darden College of Education is committed to excellence in teaching, scholarly activities, and service. The College strives to meet the needs of the community while maintaining national and international prominence. It is dedicated to preparing distinguished professionals who become leaders in their fields. The College fulfills its mission through its undergraduate and graduate programs in the fields of education, counseling and human services, exercise science, sports management, recreation, training, fashion, speech-language disorders, instructional and occupational technology, as well as through its many continuing education activities.

Old Dominion University's major purpose in its teacher education programs is to prepare teachers and educational leaders who have adequate knowledge of their teaching disciplines, ability to practice state-of-the-art instruction to students of various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, and attitudes which promote commitment to teaching and learning as well as lifelong professional growth and development.
